Community Focus at YGG Gellionnen

The Project in a Nutshell:

Swansea Bay Foundation is proud to support Community Focus at YGG Gellionnen with a grant to help launch a pupil-run community café in the Sunnybank area of Clydach. The café will be based in the school gym and open once a week to start. It will be designed, managed, and run by pupils, creating a safe, welcoming space for the local community to meet, connect, and enjoy affordable food — all while offering real-world experience for the pupils involved.

Why This Matters:

This innovative project brings generations together, strengthens school–community ties, and gives young people a platform to build confidence and learn essential life skills. Through running the café, pupils will develop everything from food hygiene and customer service to teamwork, numeracy, and communication — all while gaining pride and ownership in something that directly benefits their wider community. For visitors, it will provide a low-cost, accessible place to meet, helping reduce social isolation and fostering a stronger sense of belonging for families and older residents alike. We’re proud to support this inspiring, pupil-led project that puts connection, creativity, and community right at its heart.
